Bare Is Better, But...

While we're on the subject of floors, I just have to feature these very pet friendly rugs from G.T. Design. Bare is better when it comes to the floors in your pet friendly home, but a few area rugs here and there can help create a softer touch. These G.T. area rugs are made from coconut fiber that is thermo-insulating, anti-static, resistant to fungi and mould, hard-wearing and easy to clean. They're also incredibly stylish.

Area rugs will inevitably trap pet hair and dust, so use them sparingly. And don't buy an expensive persian rug! You'll see the paw prints all over it in no time.

Another good material for durable stain resistant rugs is wool. Hand knotted wool rugs are also very durable. Wool is a strong material and the natural lanolin found on wool (especially Icelandic wool) is and excellent repellant making wool area rugs naturally stain resistant. Unfortunately as far as dogs go, a high end rug makes a very expensive chew toy.

I disagree completely about Persian rugs. A tightly knotted wool Persian is one of the most durable, hard-wearing rugs you can find. We have a very large (11x13) antique Persian rug that's has been through decades of dogs. It has been pee'd on, pooped on, puked on, bled on and had wine, coffee and other nasty things spilled on it -- but it looks as good as new. If don't buy a loosely knotted rug or one made with vegetable dyes that bleed, they wear like iron.

We send it out to get professionally cleaned every other year (about $200) and spot clean as needed.

Another good rug/carpet idea in a house full of dogs is Flor. We have Flor squares in the kitchen and laundry room and will add them in other areas as we need new rugs.
